Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday. The leaders focused on rising clashes between the Syrian army and Kurdish-led forces in northern Syria. Both expressed deep concern over instability and ongoing violence.
During the call, Barzani and Macron emphasized the need for all parties to de-escalate tensions immediately. They also reaffirmed support for the March 2025 agreement between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the interim Damascus government. This deal aims to integrate the SDF into the Syrian state while promoting political stability.
The conversation comes amid international efforts to end renewed fighting. The SDF accused the Syrian army of violating a US-brokered truce. Consequently, regional actors and international mediators have intensified coordination to prevent further escalation.
Both presidents praised Barzani’s mediation role in Syria. Macron acknowledged his efforts to calm tensions and maintain dialogue among conflicting parties. Meanwhile, Barzani stressed the importance of securing Kurdish rights in Syria’s future political structure.
Earlier on Saturday, a key meeting took place in Erbil. US Special Envoy Tom Barrack met with Kurdish leaders from the Kurdistan Region and northeast Syria (Rojava). President Masoud Barzani hosted the talks, focusing on de-escalation measures and implementing the March 10 SDF-Damascus agreement.
The Elysee Palace confirmed that both leaders expressed support for resuming discussions on SDF integration without delay. They called for completing the process to strengthen Syrian unity and long-term stability.
In addition, Barzani and Macron agreed on the need for continued international coordination. They highlighted dialogue, humanitarian support, and protection of civilians as critical priorities. Leaders underscored that political solutions, rather than military action, are essential for lasting peace.
Observers noted that the call strengthens ties between the Kurdistan Region and France. It also reinforces the international community’s focus on mediating the Kurdish issue in Syria.
In conclusion, the Barzani-Macron discussion emphasized immediate de-escalation, protection of Kurdish rights, and implementation of the 2025 SDF-Damascus agreement, aiming to secure Syria’s stability.
