Roonakî Project to Bring 24-Hour Electricity Across the Region

The Kurdistan Regional Government aims to provide 24-hour electricity to the entire region by the end of this year. The Roonakî (Lighting) Project, a key initiative of the ninth cabinet, has already delivered continuous electricity to 75% of towns and cities. Officials plan to extend coverage to 100% by year-end.

Minister of Electricity Kamal Muhammad Salih stated that the government added 1,840 megawatts to the electricity grid under the current cabinet. He explained that these additions aim to finally solve a problem that has persisted for 30 years. Salih emphasized that this year, all areas will benefit from uninterrupted electricity service.

Currently, electricity demand peaks during the winter season. In areas without full coverage, residents faced reduced electricity supply. To prevent technical issues from affecting cities already receiving 24-hour electricity, the expansion of the Roonakî Project will pause until February. Officials said this pause ensures stable service while preparing for complete regional coverage.

The project represents one of the most ambitious infrastructure initiatives in Kurdistan. Beyond increasing supply, it modernizes power distribution networks and enhances reliability. The government hopes that providing continuous electricity will also support economic growth, local businesses, and public services.

Furthermore, residents across the region have expressed optimism about the project. Many see it as a milestone in improving living standards and regional development. Officials noted that with full implementation, electricity shortages will no longer disrupt daily life or economic activities.

The Roonakî Project also aligns with the Kurdistan Region’s broader development goals. Authorities aim to strengthen energy infrastructure, reduce dependency on imports, and ensure sustainable management of electricity resources.

By the end of this year, officials expect every town and city in the Kurdistan Region to enjoy 24-hour electricity. The government remains committed to monitoring technical performance and ensuring uninterrupted service for all citizens.
