Runaki Project Reports Temporary Power Outage Following Kawrgosk Station Malfunction

The Runaki Project team reported a temporary electricity outage across several local districts on Wednesday. Technical engineers attributed the sudden service interruption to an unexpected equipment malfunction at the Kawrgosk power station.

Operational crews immediately began emergency repairs at the affected substation in Khabat district, Erbil Governorate. Furthermore, official representatives confirmed that field technicians were working to restore high-voltage transmission lines serving the affected communities.

Project directors assured local consumers that specialized maintenance teams would resolve the technical issues within hours. Therefore, regular electricity transmission is expected to resume across all affected residential areas before the end of the day.

The Kawrgosk power station plays an essential role in supplying electricity to surrounding areas. Moreover, technical authorities regularly address similar breakdowns to maintain the reliability of the regional power grid.

The Runaki Project represents a strategic government initiative aimed at providing continuous, 24-hour electricity across the Kurdistan Region. Prime Minister Masrour Barzani launched the program in 2024 as part of broader efforts to modernize the region’s electricity infrastructure.

Under the development framework, authorities plan to reduce dependence on private neighborhood generators by the end of 2026. Consequently, upgrading regional substations remains essential for stabilizing electricity generation and ensuring reliable public power distribution.

Modernizing the regional electricity grid supports broader economic development goals across the Kurdistan Region. In addition, transitioning from private generators to unified public power networks could reduce environmental pollution and lower household electricity costs.

Moving forward, utility crews will continue monitoring the substation to help prevent future technical disruptions. Ultimately, completing planned infrastructure upgrades is expected to provide stable and uninterrupted electricity supplies to communities across the Kurdistan Region.
