Renowned sculptor Chenar Nizar is bringing Kurdish history to life through his striking statues. Moreover, he now enhances his work with QR codes, allowing viewers worldwide to explore Kurdish culture in multiple languages.
Born in Sulaimani in 1986, Nizar discovered his talent early. His primary school teacher, Mohammed Abdul Karim, nurtured his skills by showcasing his drawings. Consequently, this encouragement fueled his passion for art. Later, he refined his craft at the Institute of Fine Arts in Sulaimani.
Nizar’s sculptures fall into two main themes. First, he creates pieces inspired by nature, life, and social issues. Second, he honors Kurdish literary and historical figures. Currently, he is finishing a statue of the famed Kurdish poet Haji Qadir Koyi, which will stand in Koisanjaq.
Additionally, Nizar now incorporates QR codes into his statues. Visitors can scan these codes to access detailed information about the artwork. The digital content includes the subject’s background, the sculpture’s purpose, and even behind-the-scenes videos. Furthermore, translations in various languages help share Kurdish culture globally.
Nizar believes public art defines a city’s identity. For instance, Sulaimani’s statues and architecture immediately impress visitors. By merging tradition with technology, he ensures Kurdish heritage reaches new audiences.
