Washington, DC – US President Donald Trump expressed support for the Kurds on Tuesday, emphasizing his administration’s efforts to protect the ethnic group.
“I like the Kurds,” Trump said in an interview, adding that the United States has provided significant support, including oil and financial assistance. He explained that the Kurds have acted in ways that benefited both their communities and the United States.
The president’s remarks come amid ongoing attacks by the Syrian Arab Army on the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The strikes continue despite a four-day ceasefire announced by Damascus late Tuesday.
Kurds have staged protests in SDF-held northeast Syria, the Kurdistan Region, Turkey, and multiple European countries. Many demonstrators expressed frustration with the United States, accusing Washington of failing to protect the Kurds despite a decade-long partnership in the fight against ISIS.
On Tuesday, the Syrian government announced it had reached a “mutual understanding” with the SDF regarding the future of the Kurdish-majority Hasaka province. Following the agreement, the Syrian Defense Ministry declared a four-day ceasefire starting at 8 p.m. local time. Despite the ceasefire, the SDF reported continued attacks by Damascus-affiliated forces.
Trump’s envoy for Syria highlighted that the Kurds’ best opportunity lies in Syria’s post-Assad transition. The envoy referenced interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa, noting that Kurdish inclusion in future governance could provide security and stability.
Observers noted that the situation remains fragile, with tensions between Damascus and Kurdish forces continuing to affect civilians. Analysts stressed that international coordination and dialogue remain critical to protecting Kurdish rights.
President Trump concluded by reaffirming US commitment to Kurdish security. He stressed that Washington will continue its support and diplomatic engagement to ensure stability in the region.
