UKH EU Delegation Visit Highlights Educational Cooperation and Diplomatic Dialogue

The UKH EU delegation visit marked a significant step in strengthening international cooperation in education and diplomacy. Specifically, the University of Kurdistan Hewlêr (UKH) hosted Mr. Radu Butum, Head of the European Union Liaison Office in Erbil.

During the visit, Mr. Butum participated in a Chatham House-style discussion. The session focused on diplomacy, international relations, and EU engagement in the Kurdistan Region. Notably, students, faculty, and guests attended the event to explore Europe’s evolving diplomatic role.

In his remarks, Mr. Butum emphasized the European Union’s commitment to supporting educational institutions in the Kurdistan Region. He noted that academic collaboration is a key part of the EU’s long-term strategy in Iraq and the wider region.

Furthermore, he praised UKH’s academic model and highlighted the university’s role in preparing students for leadership and global engagement. According to Butum, the EU views institutions like UKH as essential to regional development.

Moreover, the UKH EU delegation visit provided students with a rare opportunity to engage directly with European diplomats. Participants actively asked questions about EU foreign policy, education initiatives, and future cooperation opportunities.

Importantly, UKH officials welcomed the exchange of ideas. They reiterated the university’s mission to serve as a regional hub for academic excellence and policy dialogue. They also expressed appreciation for the EU’s continued support.

In addition, the discussion covered key international issues. Topics included the EU’s role in Middle East peacebuilding, support for governance reforms, and human rights advocacy. As such, the visit reflected the EU’s broader approach to soft power and people-to-people engagement.

To conclude, the UKH EU delegation visit reinforced ties between the European Union and higher education institutions in Kurdistan. It demonstrated how academic diplomacy can build bridges and deepen mutual understanding.
