Ukraine Plans to Open Consulate in Erbil to Boost Ties

Ukraine is preparing to strengthen its relationship with the Kurdistan Region by opening a consulate in Erbil before the end of this year. Ambassador Ivan Dovhanych confirmed the plan during a recent interview, highlighting the move as an important step toward deeper cooperation.

Dovhanych stated that Ukraine has already approved the establishment of a consulate general in Erbil. However, the process has faced delays due to ongoing bureaucratic procedures. Despite these obstacles, he expressed confidence that permission will be granted soon. He emphasized that Ukraine is fully prepared to proceed once final approvals are secured.

Moreover, the ambassador underlined Kyiv’s desire to enhance cooperation with the Kurdistan Region in several sectors. He stressed that Ukraine aims to develop stronger economic and trade relations, alongside wider collaboration in other fields. According to him, opening a consulate in Erbil will allow both sides to take practical steps toward achieving these goals.

Trade remains a central pillar of Ukraine’s regional strategy. Dovhanych noted that bilateral trade volume has shown signs of recovery after a significant wartime decline. Before Russia’s attacks in 2022, annual trade stood at about $700 million. It dropped to $190 million the following year but has now rebounded to an expected $300 million in 2025.

He explained that this growth reflects renewed efforts from both business communities to rebuild economic ties. He also added that Ukraine sees great potential for further cooperation in various sectors, including agriculture, technology, and energy.

Additionally, the ambassador expressed Kyiv’s long-term commitment to expanding its presence in Erbil. He said Ukraine views the Kurdistan Region as a strategic partner and intends to invest in building sustainable relationships.

The planned consulate opening marks an important diplomatic step and signals a new phase of collaboration. Officials from both sides are expected to meet soon to finalize the remaining procedures and discuss future economic opportunities.
