Zakho has started building the region’s largest fountain as part of a $13 million tourism project. The city plans to make it a major attraction to draw visitors from nearby areas and abroad. Officials expect the project to boost the economy and create a vibrant new space for residents and tourists.
The plan includes far more than just the fountain. Work also covers the development of the Khabur River banks, a modern corniche, and the revival of the old market. Additionally, the city will build an underground parking area to handle the rise in visitor numbers.
Project supervisor Zahra Salim explained that the fountain will stand 40 meters high and use advanced technology. She confirmed that no other fountain in the Kurdistan Region matches its features. The system will combine water displays with music, lasers, and colorful lights. This mix will give visitors a unique and exciting show.
The site covers four dunams, and the cost has reached about 13 billion dinars so far. Director General of Tourism in Zakho, Jiya Amin, stressed the fountain’s role in tourism plans. He believes it will become a central part of the city’s growth strategy.
When finished, the fountain will serve as both a landmark and an economic driver. Leaders hope it will encourage more tourism and commerce, making Zakho a top destination in the region.
