Hoshyar Zebari, a senior Kurdish politician, has issued a strong warning about the rising danger facing the Kurdistan Region. He stressed that ongoing drone attacks by armed militias linked to the Popular Mobilization Forces have pushed the situation to the edge of chaos.
Speaking in an interview with Al-Sumaria, Zebari criticized the lack of firm action from Baghdad. He explained that the Kurdistan Region’s security forces, along with international partners, have investigated the attacks. These investigations revealed that the drones were launched from areas under militia control, including the Nineveh Plains, parts of Kirkuk, and other regions.
Zebari noted that the strikes have targeted vital locations such as Sulaimani, Erbil airport, Kirkuk airport, and oil facilities. He warned that the main goal is to scare oil companies into halting operations in Kurdistan. He described this as not only a threat to the region’s economy but also to Western interests.
Furthermore, he revealed that militias have tried to disguise their involvement by changing drone types. Despite this, Kurdish and allied intelligence have gathered clear evidence. Last month alone, fourteen drone attacks were recorded.
Zebari also warned that the United States is losing patience. He said Washington has sent a clear message opposing moves to strengthen the militias, and that sanctions and an end to cooperation are possible.
He concluded by urging immediate action, warning that the situation could spiral out of control at any moment.
