Iraq Reopens Europe Flights from Erbil After Conflict Disruption

Iraq has taken a big step toward restoring normal travel by resuming flights from Erbil International Airport to key European cities. The return of these flights brings relief to travelers and signals progress after weeks of disruption. The renewed flights from Erbil to Europe began with a direct route to Copenhagen, followed by services to London.

The move marks the official reopening of major air corridors between the Kurdistan Region and Europe. The Head of the Union of Aviation Companies in the Kurdistan Region, Lovend Mahmoudi, confirmed that flights to Germany and the Netherlands will also begin shortly. He stated that many passengers had waited anxiously for this return.

For many Kurdish citizens from Western Iran who had been stuck in the Kurdistan Region, the reopened flights provide much-needed access to Europe. Mahmoudi explained that travelers can now reach their European destinations without delays or restrictions. These routes restore critical connections between families, jobs, and communities.

The return of European-bound flights from Erbil comes after major disruptions caused by the recent Iran-Israel conflict. That 12-day war severely affected regional airspace, causing over 1,200 flight cancellations. Before the conflict, Erbil International Airport handled nearly 70 flights per day. The sudden halt left thousands stranded and delayed cargo and passenger movement.

The delayed flights from Erbil caused economic setbacks and personal hardship. However, aviation companies are now increasing flight frequency to recover lost ground. Mahmoudi encouraged more airlines to return and operate from Erbil. He said full recovery depends on broader participation from international aviation carriers.

Furthermore, efforts are underway to stabilize ticket prices and expand capacity. Airlines aim to offer more options and prevent overcrowding on resumed routes. The aviation authority believes that adding more flights will help clear the backlog of canceled trips and ease pressure on travelers.

Erbil International Airport serves as a key link between the Kurdistan Region and the rest of the world. Its ability to reconnect with Europe marks a vital step in post-conflict recovery. The airport hopes to soon return to pre-crisis activity levels as more airlines rejoin operations.

In summary, Iraq has reopened European flights from Erbil, ending a period of delays and disruption. The return of regular air service supports travel, family reunions, and business connections across borders.
