Erbil Steps Up Action Against Child Labor

Authorities in Erbil have increased efforts to address child labor on the city’s streets. For nearly two months, a special committee has monitored children working in public areas. Yousef Chawshin, Director General of Social Welfare and Development in Erbil, confirmed that the team is closely tracking the issue.

The committee’s work focuses on identifying children engaged in selling goods, cleaning car windows, and other street activities. Once identified, the children are offered guidance and support services designed to bring them back to safe environments.

Officials stress that child labor not only harms education but also places young people at risk. Therefore, the campaign also works to raise awareness among families. By promoting social support programs, the authorities aim to reduce financial pressures that push children into labor.

In addition, Erbil leaders are coordinating with civil society groups to provide training and assistance. These partnerships focus on giving families alternatives that ensure children stay in school and away from dangerous street work.

The initiative highlights a growing recognition that protecting children is essential for the region’s future. With stronger policies and continued monitoring, officials hope to limit child labor and expand opportunities for the next generation.
