Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani welcomed Muthanna al-Samarrai, head of the Azem Alliance, in Erbil’s Pirmam district to discuss Iraq’s upcoming parliamentary elections.
During the meeting, the two leaders examined the latest political developments in Iraq and the wider region. They stressed the importance of coordination and cooperation among all Iraqi political parties to ensure a smooth and fair electoral process. Both emphasized that inclusive participation is essential to strengthen Iraq’s political stability.
The discussions come as Iraq prepares for its next parliamentary elections, scheduled for November 11. Analysts note that these elections will test Iraq’s fragile political landscape, with challenges including disputes over representation, security concerns, and tensions between Baghdad and the Kurdistan Region.
Barzani and al-Samarrai also addressed longstanding issues between Erbil and Baghdad, including budget allocations, oil revenue sharing, security responsibilities, and the implementation of Article 140 of the Iraqi constitution. They highlighted the need for continued dialogue to prevent disputes from disrupting governance.
The Azem Alliance, under al-Samarrai, has emerged as a key Sunni political bloc in Baghdad. It actively advocates for Sunni interests and pushes for investment in areas liberated from ISIS. The alliance collaborates closely with the Nineveh For Its People coalition, representing the province’s diverse communities. Through this cooperation, the Azem Alliance has strengthened its role in shaping parliamentary coalitions and national policymaking.
By meeting with Barzani, al-Samarrai reinforced the alliance’s intent to enhance ties with the Kurdistan Region. The leaders agreed that joint efforts and constructive dialogue can promote unity, reduce political friction, and support a stable electoral outcome.
Observers view this engagement as a significant step toward consensus-building in Iraq. Barzani’s discussions with the Azem Alliance signal a proactive approach by Kurdish leadership to foster cooperation and inclusive political participation ahead of the pivotal vote.
