President Masoud Barzani Emphasizes Kurdish Diaspora Unity

President Masoud Barzani emphasized the importance of Kurdish diaspora unity in protecting Kurdistan’s identity, language, and culture. He met with a delegation of 110 Kurdish youth from the diaspora, including 12 Europeans, at his residence in Pirmam near Erbil.

During the meeting, Barzani stressed the need for unifying Kurds living abroad under one national framework. He said this unity will strengthen cultural identity and enhance global support for the Kurdish cause.

Ismail Kamil, head of the Kurdistani Diaspora Confederation, thanked President Barzani for his continuous efforts in connecting Kurds abroad with their homeland. He noted that Barzani’s encouragement has been vital in building a structured organization for the diaspora.

Yad Amin, president of the Kurdistani Diaspora Youth Federation, explained the federation’s creation and its goals. He shared details about the youth delegation’s visit and the organization’s plans to promote cultural programs and educational exchanges that strengthen Kurdish diaspora unity.

In his remarks, President Barzani highlighted the role of the diaspora in promoting Kurdish interests globally. He called on Kurdish youth to actively participate in diplomatic, political, and cultural efforts abroad. Barzani said the diaspora should serve as a bridge between their host countries and Kurdistan, spreading awareness about Kurdish rights and achievements.

He also reaffirmed Kurdistan’s peaceful approach toward achieving a fair solution to the Kurdish question across all regions.

The Kurdish diaspora, estimated at 1.2 to 1.5 million people, formed through decades of displacement and political struggles. Large Kurdish communities exist across Western Europe, North America, and other parts of the world.

Germany hosts the largest Kurdish community in Europe, with estimates ranging from 500,000 to over one million. France, the Netherlands, and Sweden also have strong Kurdish populations. In the United States, Nashville is home to the largest Kurdish community, known as “Little Kurdistan,” housing around 15,000 to 20,000 residents.

The Kurdistan Regional Government has strengthened ties with its diaspora through education and cultural initiatives. Recently, an online Kurdish language course launched its fourth edition, drawing over 2,500 students from 42 countries across Europe and Asia.

The meeting reaffirmed Barzani’s belief that Kurdish diaspora unity is key to preserving identity and strengthening Kurdistan’s voice on the international stage.
