Fazel Mirani Criticizes Iraq’s Political System as One of ‘Diminished Sovereignty’

Fazel Mirani, head of the Kurdistan Democratic Party’s Political Bureau Executive Committee, described Iraq as a state of “diminished sovereignty” governed by a deeply flawed system. In his remarks, Mirani argued that the current political and electoral structure favors one group, undermining genuine democracy and national balance.

He stated that the existing election law was crafted to secure a Shiite majority, limiting fair representation for other communities, including Kurds and Sunnis. According to Mirani, this imbalance continues to weaken political institutions and prevent progress toward an inclusive and stable state.

Mirani emphasized that Iraq’s sovereignty remains compromised due to internal divisions, external influence, and a system that fails to reflect the country’s diversity. He called for comprehensive reforms to restore political fairness and ensure equal participation for all components of the nation.

The KDP official also urged political leaders to pursue dialogue and cooperation rather than deepening divisions. He noted that true sovereignty can only emerge through a transparent, just, and representative political framework that respects all communities.

Mirani’s remarks highlight growing concerns over the country’s political direction and the urgent need for reform-driven consensus.
