Kurdistan Prime Minister Masrour Barzani officially launched the Erbil Green Belt Project, a large-scale environmental initiative designed to fight climate change, expand green spaces, and generate new job opportunities for young people across the region.
During the ceremony, Barzani said that the project reflects the government’s long-term vision for a cleaner, more sustainable Kurdistan. He emphasized that protecting nature goes hand in hand with improving citizens’ livelihoods. The initiative will focus on planting millions of trees around Erbil, restoring degraded land, and supporting eco-friendly urban planning.
Barzani also noted that the project will create thousands of jobs for the region’s youth, particularly in forestry, landscaping, and environmental management. “The flower blooms because of the rain, not because of the thunder. Likewise, we will continue to rebuild Kurdistan with patience and perseverance,” he said, underscoring his government’s steady approach to reform and growth.
Moreover, the prime minister stressed the importance of community participation, urging schools, municipalities, and local organizations to contribute to environmental conservation. He stated that the Green Belt will not only reduce air pollution but also serve as a symbol of Kurdistan’s resilience and unity in addressing global challenges.
Officials confirmed that the first phase will cover Erbil’s surrounding districts, with plans to expand the initiative to other provinces soon.
