Erbil Advances Second Phase of Strategic Highway Renovation Connecting Smaquli

Local authorities are currently advancing plans for the second phase of a vital highway renovation project. Specifically, the initiative focuses on the critical route connecting Erbil to the town of Smaquli. Engineering teams recently finished the first stage of this important infrastructure development successfully.

The Erbil Roads Maintenance and Protection Directorate launched this extensive renovation just a short while ago. Consequently, they want to modernize provincial infrastructure to meet international transit standards. For this reason, the road now handles a rapidly growing volume of regional transport daily.

An aging surface and heavy traffic created tough conditions for motorists on the old route previously. Therefore, the highway evolved far beyond its original structural design over the last several decades. Originally, engineering teams built this specific route to serve only as a secondary corridor.

The road now serves as a primary traffic artery for the entire region instead. Furthermore, engineers reconfigured the route to optimize transit times for daily commuters. As a result, this strategic adjustment successfully reduced the total road length to nearly 25 kilometers.

The entire highway renovation project follows a strict three-phase development plan accordingly. Meanwhile, the total estimated cost for the initiative reaches one billion dinars. Workers fully completed the first phase by completely resurfacing and restoring all the designated sections.

The government already secured the necessary funding for the upcoming second phase of development. Additionally, this specific stage covers a distance of 10 kilometers. Construction teams plan to begin active physical work on the section in the near future.

The directorate manages several other road renovation initiatives across the province simultaneously. For instance, they recently completed an overhaul of the main road connecting Qandil and Makradan. Technical teams continue to apply advanced asphalt mixtures to enhance long-term durability.

Sustaining the expansive Erbil road network requires close to 70 billion dinars annually. In conclusion, this massive figure highlights the massive scale of current provincial infrastructure investments. The government aims to expand regional trade capabilities through these continuous transportation upgrades.
