At the MEPS 2025 forum, Hoshyar Zebari spoke strongly about Kurdistan’s role in regional politics. He argued that Kurdistan must pursue a sovereign foreign policy. He warned against becoming an annex to any external power. Moreover, he stressed that independent decision-making strengthens national security and regional stability.
Zebari also highlighted the importance of government control over armed groups. He stated that militias operating outside official authority threaten both security and public trust. He urged authorities to enforce the rule of law and ensure all forces follow state oversight. By doing so, he argued, Kurdistan can prevent internal conflict and protect its citizens.
Additionally, Zebari praised Turkey’s peace process as a model for resolving long-standing issues. He called it the only realistic path to address the Kurdish question. He emphasized that dialogue and negotiation, rather than military action, offer lasting solutions. Furthermore, he encouraged all parties to respect agreements and pursue political cooperation.
Zebari concluded by underlining that Kurdistan’s future depends on strategic independence and adherence to law. He insisted that only through these measures can the region secure peace, stability, and international respect. His statements sent a clear signal that leadership must prioritize sovereignty and constructive engagement with neighbors.
