Kurdistan: President Barzani Calls Zakho “Heart and Soul” at Book Fair

President Masoud Barzani inaugurated the Zakho International Book Fair, praising the city as his “heart and soul.” He described Zakho as a hub of culture, art, and courage, highlighting its long history of intellectual and creative achievement. The fair features 20,000 titles from 50 publishers across 10 countries, and it runs for six days.

During the opening ceremony, Barzani emphasized the role of literature in preserving Kurdish identity and heritage. He encouraged young readers and writers to explore diverse genres, study cultural works, and engage with global ideas. Moreover, he praised the organizers for creating a platform that connects communities through books, knowledge, and dialogue.

Barzani also highlighted Zakho’s significance as a center for cultural exchange. He said the city has long welcomed artists, scholars, and thinkers from different regions, fostering creativity and resilience. Furthermore, he explained that hosting an international book fair strengthens ties with other nations and promotes understanding across borders.

Visitors and publishers expressed excitement about the fair, noting the unique opportunity to showcase Kurdish literature alongside international works. The event includes workshops, panel discussions, and author meet-and-greets, aimed at inspiring both young and experienced readers.

The president concluded by reaffirming his support for education, culture, and the arts. He urged communities to embrace reading as a way to strengthen knowledge, unity, and creative expression in Kurdistan.
