Kurdistan – KRG Details Multi-Year Escalation Targeting Energy Infrastructure

The Kurdistan Regional Government released a detailed report on Wednesday that outlines a seven-year escalation of attacks targeting the Region’s key energy infrastructure. Officials presented a clear four-phase timeline that tracks coordinated attempts to weaken Kurdistan’s gas fields, power stations, and export capabilities from 2018 through 2025.

The report states that hostile groups intensified attacks each year and expanded their targets as Kurdistan increased electricity production and pursued energy diversification. Officials stressed that the pattern shows strategic intent rather than isolated incidents. They also emphasized that every phase created stronger pressure on the Region’s economy, stability, and long-term energy planning.

According to the document, the escalation reached its peak in 2025. That year’s major assault struck the Khor Mor gas field and immediately halted gas flows to power stations. The sudden disruption dropped gas output to zero and removed more than 3,000 megawatts from Kurdistan’s power grid. This drop created widespread shortages, forced emergency rationing, and strained critical services.

Officials said the attack also exposed gaps in national security coordination and highlighted the need for stronger air-defense coverage around vital energy sites. They argued that the pattern of aggression targeted Kurdistan’s economic lifelines and sought to undermine its growth and reform efforts.

The report concludes with a call for unified political and security action. Leaders urged stronger cooperation with international partners, faster modernization of protection systems, and a comprehensive strategy to secure energy infrastructure against future threats.
