Kurdistan – KRG Delivers Full Situation Report After Deadly Floods

Kurdistan Region authorities released a comprehensive situation report after severe floods swept through several districts and created widespread damage. Torrential rains struck many areas with great force and triggered fast-moving floods that overwhelmed roads, homes, and vital infrastructure. The disaster killed four people and injured several others, and the rising waters forced many families to flee their neighborhoods. Local officials reached the affected zones quickly and coordinated rescue efforts with civil defense teams.

Moreover, the floods destroyed important bridges in Kirkuk and Garmian and disrupted normal travel throughout the region. Traffic units redirected vehicles onto safer routes to prevent further casualties. Engineers inspected damaged structures and prepared rapid repair plans to restore movement. Meanwhile, emergency workers helped stranded residents and escorted them to temporary shelters.

Chamchamal suffered some of the worst destruction. Floodwaters entered nearly 500 homes and left families without safe living conditions. Municipal teams documented each damaged property and created a detailed assessment list. Additionally, health teams visited shelters and offered medical support to displaced families.

The KRG mobilized aid teams immediately and transported food, blankets, and essential supplies to the hardest-hit towns. Humanitarian units worked with local administrations to distribute assistance fairly and efficiently. Furthermore, authorities launched compensation procedures and promised direct support for families who lost homes or relatives.

Prime Minister Masrour Barzani monitored the response and urged all institutions to maintain high readiness as more rain approaches. He also emphasized unity and encouraged communities to cooperate with local emergency teams. The KRG continues to evaluate the situation and prepares additional steps to strengthen protection across the region.
