Shaswar Abdulwahid Remains Detained Despite Sentence End

Today marks the official end of the prison sentence of Shaswar Abdulwahid, leader of the New Generation Movement. His legal team completed all required procedures for his release following the completion of the five-month term. However, despite fulfilling the sentence, Abdulwahid will not leave prison today due to unresolved legal cases.

According to information obtained through follow-up, Abdulwahid faces several additional cases that remain under judicial review. These pending files prevent his release and will move forward to court proceedings. Legal sources confirmed that the existence of multiple unresolved complaints requires continued detention under current legal procedures.

Shaswar Abdulwahid completed his original prison term on Monday after spending five months in custody. Authorities initially detained him on August 12 of last year. The court issued the sentence based on a complaint filed under Article 2 of the Law on the Misuse of Communication Devices. That ruling resulted in a five-month prison term, which has now formally ended.

Despite the completion of that sentence, judicial developments continued during his detention. Over the past months, several new complaints were registered against him at the Sulaymaniyah court. These cases have not yet reached final decisions. As a result, the legal process remains ongoing, delaying any possibility of release.

Sources familiar with the case stated that nearly 80 complaints have been filed against Abdulwahid in total. Some of these cases relate to previous political disputes and public statements. Courts have yet to consolidate or rule on many of the files, extending the legal uncertainty surrounding his situation.

Supporters of the New Generation Movement continue to monitor developments closely. Party officials previously stressed the importance of due process and legal transparency. Meanwhile, legal experts note that unresolved cases often complicate release procedures, even after sentences expire.

For now, Abdulwahid remains in detention as courts prepare to address the outstanding cases. The timeline for future hearings remains unclear. Observers expect the coming weeks to determine whether continued detention will persist or legal resolutions will allow his release.
