Erbil Expands Mine Clearance Efforts in 2025

Authorities in Erbil cleared nearly 801,000 square meters of land contaminated with landmines during 2025. The clearance work forms part of ongoing efforts to reduce risks to civilians and restore safe access to land. Officials described the progress as significant, especially in areas previously restricted due to explosive hazards.

Mine action teams focused on former conflict zones and high-risk rural locations. These areas often affect farmers, shepherds, and returning displaced families. As a result, cleared land can now support agriculture, infrastructure development, and safe movement. Officials stressed that mine clearance also supports long-term economic recovery.

Despite these advances, landmines continue to pose a serious and deadly threat. Abdulrahman, a local official involved in mine action efforts, confirmed that landmines caused multiple casualties last year. According to his statement, ten people lost their lives, while four others sustained injuries due to landmine explosions. These incidents highlight the persistent danger in uncleared areas.

Moreover, authorities warned that many contaminated zones remain across the region. Rugged terrain and difficult access slow clearance operations, particularly in mountainous and border areas. Therefore, officials emphasized the need for continued funding, technical support, and public awareness campaigns.

Mine action departments also increased community education programs. These initiatives aim to teach residents how to identify explosive remnants and report suspicious objects. Officials believe awareness reduces accidents, especially among children and rural workers.

International partners continue to support demining operations through training and equipment. Local authorities welcomed this cooperation and called for its expansion. They stressed that full clearance requires sustained international engagement.

Ultimately, the clearance of nearly 801,000 square meters represents meaningful progress. However, officials acknowledged that the threat will persist until all contaminated land is cleared. They urged residents to remain cautious and follow safety guidance. Continued mine action remains essential to protecting lives and ensuring lasting stability.
