Sulaimani Plans Kezi Monument Honoring Kurdish Resilience

Sulaimani authorities have announced plans to build the Kezi Monument in the city. Governor Haval Abubakr confirmed the project on Wednesday. The monument will honor Kurdish resilience and national identity.

The plan follows widespread public reaction to recent attacks on female Kurdish fighters in Rojava. In response, many Kurds embraced the braid, known as Kezi, as a cultural symbol. As a result, local leaders began discussing permanent recognition.

Governor Abubakr said the monument will reflect unity and resistance. He explained that the braid carries deep historical meaning. Moreover, it represents dignity, continuity, and collective strength.

Officials said the idea gained momentum after global Kurdish solidarity campaigns. Meanwhile, artists and activists promoted the braid as a symbol of defiance. Consequently, regional authorities considered ways to preserve the message.

The Sulaimani project forms part of a wider regional initiative. Other cities have also adopted symbolic gestures. For example, public spaces now reflect themes of unity and cultural pride.

Local planners said the monument will stand in a prominent location. Therefore, residents and visitors will see it daily. Officials added that the design will respect cultural values.

Authorities also stressed that the monument will serve educational purposes. Schools and community groups may use the site for events. In addition, officials expect it to encourage dialogue on identity.

Public reaction in Sulaimani has remained largely supportive. Many residents welcomed the announcement. They said the monument honors women and resistance.

Furthermore, officials linked the project to broader cultural preservation efforts. The city continues to invest in heritage initiatives. As a result, cultural landmarks now play a growing role in public spaces.

Governor Abubakr emphasized peaceful expression. He said symbols can convey strength without violence. Therefore, the monument aims to inspire rather than provoke.

Planning committees will finalize designs in coming weeks. Authorities will announce timelines later. Meanwhile, consultations with artists will continue.

Through this project, Sulaimani reinforces its cultural role. The Kezi Monument will stand as a lasting symbol of resilience.
