PM Barzani Commemorates 2004 Erbil Attacks

ERBIL – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani marked the anniversary of the 2004 Erbil attacks on Sunday. He laid a wreath at the site to honor the 101 victims of the Eid al-Adha suicide bombings that targeted the KDP and PUK headquarters. The attacks are widely cited as a catalyst for Kurdish political unity.

During the ceremony, PM Barzani emphasized the resilience of the Kurdish people. He stated that despite the tragedy, Kurdish communities have remained committed to solidarity, peace, and democracy. Leaders from both the KDP and PUK attended the event, reinforcing a message of ongoing unity.

Barzani noted that the attacks, while devastating, strengthened cooperation among Kurdish political factions. He highlighted that political and security reforms implemented afterward have helped safeguard civilians and maintain stability in the Kurdistan Region.

The Prime Minister also called on the international community to remember the sacrifices made by the victims and to continue supporting Kurdish political and humanitarian efforts. He stressed that honoring the memory of those lost should inspire ongoing efforts to prevent extremism and protect communities.

Participants observed a moment of silence and laid flowers at the memorial site. Families of the victims expressed appreciation for the tribute and acknowledged the progress made in the region since the attacks.

Observers said the anniversary ceremony underscores the importance of unity, resilience, and remembrance in Kurdish political life. Barzani concluded by reaffirming the Kurdistan Region’s commitment to stability, regional security, and cooperation among Kurdish parties.
