Kurdistan Region Backs Proposal for Ministry of AI and Technology

The Kurdistan Region is considering a proposal to establish a Ministry of Technology and Artificial Intelligence. The plan aims to modernize governance and improve public services. Moreover, Kurdistan Region AI ministry discussions have gained momentum with backing from PM Barzani.

Technology specialist Bahar Amedi presented the proposal during recent policy discussions. She said the ministry would focus on data-driven governance and ethical AI use. In addition, the proposal highlights digital sovereignty and the protection of Kurdish identity. Therefore, officials see the plan as both a technological and cultural initiative.

Amedi explained that artificial intelligence can improve decision-making across government institutions. For example, AI systems could support healthcare planning and education management. Furthermore, digital tools could enhance transparency and efficiency. As a result, Kurdistan Region AI ministry plans aim to reduce bureaucracy and improve service delivery.

PM Barzani has shown support for digital transformation projects. Officials say his backing reflects a broader reform agenda. Meanwhile, government advisers stress the importance of regulation and ethics. Consequently, the proposal includes safeguards against data misuse and external dependence.

The plan also calls for cooperation with universities and private companies. Therefore, local talent development remains a key priority. Amedi emphasized training Kurdish youth in advanced technologies. In turn, this approach could reduce reliance on foreign expertise. Thus, Kurdistan Region AI ministry efforts could strengthen long-term capacity.

Regional officials believe digital governance can support economic growth. Additionally, they see technology as a tool for institutional reform. Ultimately, supporters argue that the proposed ministry could position the Kurdistan Region as a regional leader in responsible AI adoption.
