President Masoud Barzani Urges Baghdad to Act Against Armed Groups After Erbil Drone Strike

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – President Masoud Barzani called on the Iraqi government to curb outlawed armed groups following a deadly drone strike that targeted Erbil International Airport.

The Erbil drone attack killed airport employee Welat Tahir and injured others, raising serious concerns about security in the Kurdistan Region.

In a statement, President Barzani urged authorities in Baghdad to take decisive action against the groups responsible for such attacks. He said the continued activities of these armed factions threaten stability and undermine state authority.

Barzani stressed that the federal government must set clear limits on outlawed groups operating outside official control. Therefore, he called for serious measures to prevent further attacks and hold those responsible accountable.

The Erbil drone attack targeted the airport area, which hosts both civilian operations and international facilities. Security officials said the incident demonstrated the growing risks posed by drone warfare in the region.

Meanwhile, Barzani expressed condolences to the family of Welat Tahir, describing him as a martyr who lost his life while performing his duties. He also wished a speedy recovery to those injured in the attack.

In addition, Barzani emphasized that protecting citizens and critical infrastructure remains a top priority for the Kurdistan Region. He noted that cooperation between Erbil and Baghdad is essential to confront security threats.

Officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack. However, Kurdish leaders say stronger action from the federal government is necessary to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The Erbil drone attack has renewed calls for tighter control over armed groups and improved coordination between regional and federal security institutions.
