Rubio Condemns Attacks in Kurdistan Region Urges Iraq to Protect U.S. Diplomatic Facilities

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has strongly condemned recent attacks carried out by Iran-aligned armed groups in Iraq, including those targeting areas in the Kurdistan Region.

According to a statement from the U.S. State Department, Rubio raised the issue during discussions with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani. The remarks come amid growing security concerns following drone and rocket attacks across Iraq.

State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott said Rubio “strongly condemned terrorist attacks by Iran and Iran-aligned terrorist militia groups in Iraq, including in the Kurdistan Region.”

Rubio also emphasized the importance of protecting American diplomatic staff and facilities in the country. He urged the Iraqi government to take all necessary steps to safeguard U.S. personnel and missions operating in Iraq.

The statement highlighted Washington’s concerns about the security environment as attacks continue to target locations linked to the United States and its partners. Recent incidents have included drone strikes and attempted attacks near diplomatic and military sites.

U.S. officials say the protection of diplomatic missions is a core responsibility of the Iraqi government. Therefore, they called for stronger measures to prevent further attacks and ensure accountability for those responsible.

The comments come as tensions in the region remain high following escalating confrontations involving Iran-aligned groups and U.S. interests in Iraq.
