ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – President Masoud Barzani strongly condemned a deadly missile strike targeting Peshmerga forces and described it as an unjustifiable act of hostility and a clear violation of international norms.
In a statement on Tuesday, Barzani said Iranian ballistic missiles carried out the early morning attack. He confirmed that the strike killed several Peshmerga fighters and injured others.
“I condemn in the strongest possible terms this attack,” Barzani said. He expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life. He also extended condolences to the victims’ families and wished the injured a quick recovery.
Barzani stressed that no circumstances can justify such an attack. Moreover, he warned that repeated assaults on the Kurdistan Region undermine stability and damage relations between neighbors.
He added that the Kurdistan Region has stayed away from regional conflicts. Therefore, he said, no justification exists for targeting its territory.
President Masoud Barzani also highlighted the importance of the Peshmerga forces. He described them as a vital national asset and a source of pride for the Kurdish people.
Meanwhile, the strike hit a Peshmerga base in the Soran area. Officials confirmed that six fighters lost their lives and several others suffered injuries.
In addition, senior Kurdish leaders strongly reacted to the incident. President Nechirvan Barzani and Prime Minister Masrour Barzani also condemned the attack and described it as direct aggression.
They warned that such actions could further destabilize the region. At the same time, they called for urgent steps to prevent similar incidents.
President concluded by urging greater international attention. He emphasized that all sides must act to stop further attacks and ensure accountability.
