Kurdistan Runaki Project Brings 24-Hour Electricity to More Than 85 Percent of Population

The Kurdistan Region has expanded round-the-clock electricity access to more than 85 percent of its population under the Runaki initiative, marking a major step in energy reform and public service improvement.

First, the latest expansion extends uninterrupted electricity service to Soran, Zakho, Raparin, Koya, Pirmam, Akre, and Simele. This progress strengthens efforts to modernize infrastructure while improving daily life for hundreds of thousands of residents.

Moreover, officials described the expansion as a major milestone in the long-term energy strategy. The project continues to reduce pressure on outdated supply systems. At the same time, it improves power stability across urban and rural communities.

In addition, the initiative aims to replace dependence on private neighborhood generators. That shift lowers costs for households and businesses. It also supports cleaner energy use and reduces environmental strain.

Furthermore, the government has linked the project to broader development goals. Reliable electricity supports economic activity, attracts investment, and improves services in health, education, and industry. As a result, officials view the expansion as both an infrastructure and economic achievement.

Meanwhile, the Runaki initiative continues to grow through phased implementation. Each new phase brings additional districts into the 24-hour network. Therefore, authorities expect even wider coverage in the coming months.

Officials also stressed that modernization efforts include smart metering, network upgrades, and efficiency improvements. These measures aim to manage demand, reduce waste, and create a more sustainable energy system.

In the same context, residents in newly connected areas have welcomed the improvement. Many view continuous electricity as a major quality-of-life change. Businesses also expect more stable operations as power disruptions decline.

Additionally, the expansion supports environmental objectives. Reduced reliance on fuel-powered generators lowers emissions and contributes to cleaner air. Consequently, the project carries both economic and environmental value.

The expansion of 24-hour electricity to over 85 percent of the population marks a significant achievement for the Kurdistan Region. The Runaki initiative continues to reshape the energy sector and move the region toward long-term sustainability.
