Kurdistan Education Ministry Advances Environmental Curriculum Initiative for All Grades

Ministry of Education of the Kurdistan Regional Government is advancing a new initiative to place environmental education across the school curriculum from early childhood through grade 12.

The ministry plans to teach sustainability, climate awareness and natural resource protection through core lessons at different grade levels.

Instead of limiting the topic to one subject, educators will weave environmental themes into science, social studies and classroom activities.

Students will learn about water conservation, recycling, biodiversity and climate responsibility from an early age. In addition, schools will promote practical activities that connect lessons to daily life.

Officials say the program aims to build long-term awareness and encourage students to take part in protecting the environment.

The initiative also supports wider education reforms. At the same time, it links classroom learning with the Kurdistan Region’s growing focus on sustainability.

Educators are now finalizing implementation plans. Next, the ministry will prepare materials and training to help schools introduce the program.

Officials believe the initiative can strengthen environmental culture among younger generations. Moreover, they say schools can play a direct role in shaping responsible behavior.

Observers view the plan as a major step in connecting education policy with climate action. As a result, the curriculum could support broader environmental goals across the region.

Meanwhile, the ministry continues work on integrating the initiative into the education system and preparing schools for rollout.
