$13 Billion Tourism Investment Drive Transforms Erbil’s Economy

A major investment push is reshaping Erbil’s tourism sector, with more than $13 billion committed under the Kurdistan Region’s ninth cabinet, signaling a strong shift toward economic diversification.

Saman Arab said authorities have issued 131 tourism investment licenses in the province. He noted that Erbil has granted about 700 licenses in total, with a significant share dedicated to tourism projects.

Arab explained that these projects aim to strengthen infrastructure and attract more visitors. As a result, tourism is becoming a key pillar of the region’s economy.

He stressed that the government now focuses on strategic projects rather than simply issuing permits. Therefore, officials are working to ensure real implementation and long-term impact.

In addition, the government has prioritized road development. Arab said improved transport networks will make it easier for tourists to reach destinations and travel comfortably across the region.

He also highlighted progress in water infrastructure. Authorities have built several ponds for irrigation and storage. These projects support both environmental sustainability and tourism development.

The investment drive reflects broader efforts by the Kurdistan Regional Government to diversify income sources. At the same time, officials aim to reduce reliance on traditional revenue streams.

The tourism sector is expected to create new job opportunities, especially for young people. This could help strengthen local economies and support long-term growth.

Observers say the scale of investment shows growing confidence in Kurdistan’s potential as a tourism destination. Consequently, continued development in infrastructure and services will play a crucial role in sustaining this momentum.
