PM Barzani, PM-Designate Ali al-Zaidi Discuss Government Formation and Erbil-Baghdad Issues

PM Barzani met Saturday with Ali al-Zaidi in Erbil to discuss forming Iraq’s next federal government and resolving outstanding issues between Erbil and Baghdad.

PM Barzani welcomed the Iraqi delegation and held talks on the cabinet formation process. He reaffirmed support for establishing a new federal government based on the constitution. He also stressed the need to resolve long-standing disputes through legal and political frameworks.

The prime minister emphasized that any future agreement must protect the rights of the people of Kurdistan. He added that the federal status of the Kurdistan Region must be respected in all negotiations.

Barzani said a new opportunity has emerged to address disputes in a lasting way. Therefore, he called for fair treatment of the Kurdistan Region and a political process built on partnership, balance and consensus.

For his part, al-Zaidi thanked the Kurdistan Regional Government for its support and hospitality. He said a strong Kurdistan Region strengthens federal Iraq. He also confirmed Baghdad’s commitment to constructive engagement.

The meeting highlights renewed efforts to move the political process forward. In addition, both sides aim to make progress on unresolved constitutional and administrative issues.

In a post on X, Barzani said he discussed government formation with al-Zaidi and a delegation from the Coordination Framework. He reiterated support for forming a new cabinet and resolving disputes through constitutional means.

Observers say the talks reflect a critical phase in Iraq’s transition. As a result, continued dialogue between Erbil and Baghdad will remain essential.
