KRG Signs 100 Billion Dinar Deal to Build Three Power Substations in Erbil

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has signed a 100 billion dinar contract to construct three electricity substations in Erbil, marking a new step in expanding reliable power supply across the region.

Officials said the substations will support the government’s broader “Runaki” (Light) initiative. This project aims to deliver uninterrupted 24-hour electricity to households and businesses.

The three substations will be built in key areas around Erbil. As a result, they will reduce pressure on the existing grid and improve voltage stability.

Authorities expect the project to address long-standing power shortages in fast-growing neighborhoods. In addition, it will strengthen infrastructure needed for industrial and commercial expansion.

The deal reflects the priorities of the ninth cabinet, which has focused on modernizing the energy sector. Therefore, the government continues to invest in large-scale infrastructure projects.

Officials said the substations will help cut reliance on private generators. This shift could also reduce pollution and lower costs for residents.

Moreover, the project supports long-term economic growth. Reliable electricity remains essential for attracting investment and improving public services.

The government plans to accelerate similar projects across the Kurdistan Region. Consequently, more areas are expected to gain access to continuous electricity in the coming months.

Observers say the contract represents a key milestone in energy reform. It also highlights the KRG efforts to combine infrastructure development with environmental and economic goals.
