Lawyers representing Lahur Sheikh Jangi alleged on Sunday that members of the Sulaimani Asayish threatened legal team members and their families over their courtroom strategy in a politically sensitive case linked to the 2025 Sulaimani clashes.
In a statement, the legal team claimed that individuals connected to the Asayish acted on behalf of senior figures within the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). The lawyers said the alleged threats targeted their professional work and attempted to pressure them during ongoing legal proceedings.
They also warned that such actions could undermine judicial independence and create concerns about the safety of legal representatives involved in the case. The case relates to the 2025 clashes in Sulaimani, which triggered political tensions and public debate across the Kurdistan Region.
Lahur Sheikh Jangi remains a controversial political figure following internal disputes within the PUK in recent years. The legal team called on judicial authorities and relevant institutions to guarantee protection for lawyers and ensure that legal procedures continue without interference.
As of Sunday, Sulaimani Asayish and PUK officials had not publicly responded to the allegations. Political observers say the case continues to attract significant attention because of its political and security implications in the Kurdistan Region.
The allegations come amid ongoing discussions about political tensions, judicial independence, and security-sector accountability in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
