Karwan Sabah Groundwater levels across Kurdistan have recorded a significant increase compared with the previous year. As a result, water resources have shown clear improvement in all provinces. Furthermore, officials attribute this progress to heavy rainfall and the implementation of innovative water management projects.
Karwan Sabah Hawrami, Director General of Water Resources, explained that several major water basins have experienced noticeable recovery. Moreover, he noted that northern, central, and southern areas of Erbil province have benefited from improved groundwater reserves. Therefore, many regions now enjoy stronger water availability than before.
According to officials, the Shirawa Basin recorded a remarkable improvement. In addition, the Bashtapa Basin also showed a substantial increase in groundwater levels. Consequently, water reserves in these areas have recovered at a faster pace.
Authorities also reported positive results in the Erbil Plain and Akre regions. Furthermore, monitoring teams observed clear improvements across several groundwater reservoirs. As a result, experts expressed optimism about water conditions throughout Kurdistan.
One of the key factors behind this groundwater recovery involves a modern water recharge system. Moreover, this approach transfers surface water underground in a controlled manner. Therefore, authorities can strengthen groundwater reserves and improve long-term water sustainability.
Officials have already completed several recharge projects across Kurdistan. In addition, these projects have produced strong results in multiple locations. Consequently, groundwater levels increased significantly in areas that previously faced water stress.
Some regions recorded particularly impressive gains. Furthermore, one project increased groundwater levels by as much as 90 meters. Other locations also reported substantial improvements compared with previous measurements. As a result, experts view these projects as effective tools for water management.
Heavy rainfall has also played a major role in the groundwater recovery. Moreover, higher rainfall levels have helped replenish underground reservoirs across the region. Therefore, water resources have benefited from both natural and engineered solutions.
In Sulaymaniyah and Halabja, officials linked the improvements directly to increased rainfall. Furthermore, rainfall totals rose sharply compared with previous years. Consequently, underground water reservoirs received larger amounts of recharge.

At the same time, officials warned about pressure on groundwater resources. Moreover, they stressed the importance of preventing illegal well drilling. Consequently, authorities have increased enforcement efforts to protect water reserves.
