Erbil Launches Major Excavation Across 14 Newly Identified Archaeological Sites

Authorities in the Kurdistan Region have launched a comprehensive salvage operation across fourteen newly identified historical sites. This Erbil archaeological excavation aims to protect ancient heritage along the corridor of the expanding 150-meter ring road. Rapid modern urbanization continuously unveils buried layers of the multi-millennial past of the regional capital.

Dr. Nadir Babakir Mohammed announced the initiative to balance modern development with crucial historical preservation. Consequently, technical teams have initiated detailed surveys within the historic Azza site area of Baghlominara neighborhood. These designated sites stretch across a massive developmental corridor from Kasnazan road to the Mosul-Gopal road.

Experts focus on a specific six-hundred-meter strip where a secondary road intersects the highway. Furthermore, the government mandates thorough investigations before infrastructure construction projects can legally proceed in sensitive zones. This proactive strategy ensures that heavy machinery does not destroy physical evidence of deep regional history.

Local experts manage this domestic preservation effort under direct supervision of the antiquities directorate. Additionally, archaeological professors from Salahaddin University actively participate to provide essential academic support. This vital collaboration highlights a growing institutional capacity to manage large-scale heritage projects independently.

Early digs have already unearthed numerous pottery shards from dynamic periods of Near Eastern history. Specifically, the ceramic fragments date back to the Parthian, Sassanid, and early Islamic eras. Therefore, these findings prove that the development zones hosted vibrant ancient hubs of habitation and trade.

Documenting this material culture offers crucial insights into how local populations navigated monumental regional shifts. Meanwhile, the Erbil archaeological excavation continues to yield important artifacts as teams carefully sift the soil. The Directorate of Antiquities plans to release detailed visual documentation to the public very soon.
