Canadian Parliamentary Delegation Reaffirms Commitment to Strengthening Ties with Kurdistan Region

A delegation of Canadian Members of Parliament arrived in Erbil recently to strengthen bilateral relations with the Kurdistan Region. The lawmakers reaffirmed Canada’s continued support for the Kurdish people during their official visit. Furthermore, they expressed a strong interest in expanding cooperation across political, security, and civil society sectors.

The Canadian Parliamentary Friends of the Kurds group organized this important diplomatic trip. Delegation members stated that the visit aims to deepen ties between Ottawa and Erbil. Additionally, they hope to lay the groundwork for broader long-term cooperation in the near future.

Canadian lawmaker Ziad Aboultaif highlighted the longstanding relationship between Canada and the Kurdistan Region. He specifically noted the historical cooperation between Canada and the Peshmerga forces. Consequently, Canada intends to seek closer cooperation and stronger partnerships moving forward. Aboultaif also emphasized that Canada hosts a large, vibrant, and active Kurdish community. Therefore, the lawmakers want to deliver a clear message of comprehensive and continued support.

This trip marks the second official visit of the parliamentary caucus to the region. Ahmed Hussen, a delegation member and former minister, emphasized the need for stronger coordination. Specifically, he urged closer collaboration with the Kurdistan Regional Government and local civil society organizations. Hussen noted that the Kurdish community in Canada consistently advocates for this relationship. Accordingly, the community wants Canada to establish a long-term strategic partnership with Erbil.

Canada and the Kurdistan Region forged close ties during the military campaign against ISIS. Canadian forces actively trained and advised Peshmerga forces as part of the Global Coalition. Since that campaign, the two regions have successfully expanded their cooperation. Their joint efforts now include humanitarian assistance, stabilization programs, and governance support.

The all-party caucus originally formed to strengthen parliamentary diplomacy and foster closer global ties. Previously, caucus members visited Erbil to hold meetings with senior Kurdish officials. During those meetings, they focused heavily on regional stability and security cooperation. Furthermore, the caucus consistently advocates for a higher Canadian diplomatic status in Erbil. Specifically, they want Canada to upgrade its current embassy office to a full consulate general.
