The President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, welcomed a Canadian parliamentary delegation on Sunday. The meeting focused heavily on deepening the bilateral ties between Erbil and Ottawa. Additionally, the officials discussed critical regional developments. They also highlighted how the Kurdish diaspora helps unite the two regions.
The Canadian delegation officially confirmed their country’s long-term commitment to the Kurdish people. Furthermore, the visitors emphasized that regional stability remains a top priority for Canada. The delegation also included active members of the Kurdistan Diaspora Confederation in Canada. They openly praised the peaceful coexistence of different communities across the Kurdistan Region. Moreover, they noted that Kurdish Canadians actively foster closer international relations.
This crucial diplomatic visit occurred just days after another major meeting. Prime Minister Masrour Barzani had previously received the same Canadian delegation in Erbil. During that encounter, the representatives pledged to expand joint cooperation. Consequently, Canada plans to support various sectors in Kurdistan and boost bilateral engagement.
Historically, Canada and the Kurdistan Region have maintained a very close partnership. For instance, both nations cooperated extensively in the global fight against ISIS. Furthermore, Ottawa frequently provided vital humanitarian assistance to the region. They also consistently supported stabilization efforts in areas recovering from conflict. Therefore, this latest meeting simply reflects an ongoing political and economic effort.
High-profile officials led the Canadian delegation during this productive trip. Ahmed Hussein, the foreign affairs committee chair, attended the official meeting. Canadian Member of Parliament Ziad Aboultaif also joined the diplomatic group. Additionally, several prominent members of the Kurdish diaspora participated in the talks.
Previously, the same parliamentary group visited Erbil in September 2023. At that time, Canadian MP Tom Kmiec praised Kurdistan’s safety. He promised to advocate for a stronger Canadian presence in Erbil. He also explained that the vibrant Kurdish diaspora heavily inspires their political work.
