SpaceX Seeks Approval to Launch Starlink Satellite Internet in Kurdistan Region

SpaceX formally requested permission to introduce its Starlink satellite internet service in the Kurdistan Region. This request marks a significant step in expanding local digital infrastructure.

This initiative aligns with broader efforts to strengthen telecommunications through emerging technologies. The licensing process currently enters its final stage of official government review.

According to the Ministry of Transport and Communications, SpaceX first made contact in early June. The company expressed a clear intention to provide high-speed satellite internet across the Region.

These initial discussions led to a high-level meeting on June 30. Senior government officials met directly with regional licensing representatives from SpaceX to discuss terms.

The negotiations focused on legal, technical, and administrative conditions. Officials emphasized that any licensing framework must protect the interests of local residents first.

The final agreement includes strict provisions regarding data security and user privacy. The ministry warmly welcomes Starlink as a valuable addition to the communication sector.

Officials completed the administrative preparations and submitted the framework to the cabinet. Once the cabinet approves this draft, SpaceX can begin its official operations.

Satellite internet will complement existing fiber-optic and cable networks rather than replacing them. The service will especially benefit remote communities, mountainous terrain, and underserved districts. These areas currently lack reliable ground-based infrastructure.

Starlink will operate through an official local representative instead of relying on online distribution. This unique approach ensures quick technical support and reliable regulatory compliance. Ultimately, this partnership will accelerate the development of the local digital economy.
