The Kurdistan Region has launched a new smart water management project in Erbil to improve water distribution and reduce waste. The initiative marks another step toward modernizing public services through digital technology. As a result, officials expect stronger water management across the region.
The pilot project has started in Qushtapa. It uses real-time monitoring systems to track water movement throughout the network. Therefore, engineers can identify leaks, damaged pipelines, and unauthorized connections much faster than before. Officials also expect the system to improve daily operations and strengthen service reliability.
Ari Ahmed, Director General of Water and Sewerage in the Kurdistan Region, said the project aims to reorganize the water distribution system. He added that officials plan to reduce water losses from around 40 percent to 15 percent over time. If the project reaches that goal, it will save large amounts of water every year.
The government continues facing rising water demand as cities expand. Meanwhile, higher temperatures and changing weather patterns place greater pressure on water resources. Therefore, officials believe efficient distribution now holds equal importance to increasing water supplies.
The new initiative focuses on protecting water after it enters the distribution network. In addition, digital monitoring improves oversight and supports faster decision-making. Consequently, technicians can detect problems early and complete repairs before small issues become major failures.
Authorities have already started training technical teams from regional water directorates. Moreover, specialists continue teaching employees how to operate the new monitoring system efficiently. Officials expect the project to expand across the Kurdistan Region within the next two years.
The project also supports the Kurdistan Regional Government’s broader water strategy. During recent years, authorities invested in dams, reservoirs, emergency water stations, and storage facilities. Furthermore, strategic projects in Khabat, Soran, and Kalar continue protecting groundwater while improving water supplies.
Officials believe smart technology will strengthen water security for future generations. Better monitoring reduces waste, supports long-term planning, and improves public services. If the Qushtapa pilot succeeds, the project could become a model for modern water management across the Kurdistan Region.
