The Zakho Independent Administration has started preparations for the third phase of the Zakho Corniche project. Officials expect to open the new section on Sept. 20. Therefore, the project will continue expanding one of the Kurdistan Region’s largest tourism destinations.
Mayor Younis Mohammed said construction will begin soon. He explained that officials selected the opening date to coincide with the anniversary of the Zakho Independent Administration. Moreover, authorities expect the expansion to attract more visitors and strengthen local tourism.
The third phase requires changes along the project’s route. Therefore, authorities will remove around 30 homes to create space for the new riverside development. However, officials confirmed that every affected property owner will receive financial compensation through legal procedures and court decisions.
The Corniche follows the Khabur River through Zakho. Officials plan to connect the historic Delal Bridge with Khani Bridge near the old market. As a result, visitors will enjoy a continuous waterfront filled with recreational facilities, walking paths, and public spaces.
Authorities believe the project will also support local businesses. More tourists can increase demand for restaurants, shops, hotels, and entertainment facilities. Consequently, the Corniche could create new economic opportunities across the city.
The first phase covered 1.5 kilometers along both sides of the Khabur River. Officials invested 11.5 billion Iraqi dinars in that section. In addition, the project included parks, gardens, landscaped areas, and a water barrier capable of storing 250,000 cubic meters of water.
The second phase added another three kilometers to the riverside development. Authorities invested 6 billion Iraqi dinars while expanding green spaces throughout the area. Furthermore, the project created more recreational areas for residents and visitors.
Today, the Zakho Corniche stands among the city’s most recognizable landmarks. Visitors enjoy riverside views while exploring the historic Delal Bridge and surrounding attractions. Therefore, the project blends modern urban development with Zakho’s cultural heritage.
The Corniche also supports the Kurdistan Region’s wider tourism strategy. Officials continue investing in infrastructure, public services, and recreational projects to encourage more domestic and international visitors. If the third phase succeeds, Zakho expects stronger tourism growth and greater economic activity in the coming years.
