Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani traveled to Doha on Wednesday to honor the late Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Qatar’s former Emir. His visit highlighted the close relationship between the Kurdistan Region and Qatar during a time of national mourning.
Barzani attended the official condolence ceremony after arriving in Doha. Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, welcomed him and thanked him for attending the gathering. Their meeting reflected the strong ties between both sides.
Representing the Kurdistan Regional Government, Barzani extended his condolences to Sheikh Tamim, the Al Thani family, and the people of Qatar. Moreover, he expressed sympathy for their loss and prayed for Sheikh Hamad’s eternal peace. He also wished strength and patience for the late leader’s family during this difficult period.
In response, Sheikh Tamim thanked Barzani for attending the ceremony and appreciated his heartfelt condolences. Their exchange reinforced the importance of continued friendship and mutual respect.
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013. During his leadership, he introduced major reforms that transformed the country’s economy and strengthened its international position. He expanded Qatar’s liquefied natural gas industry, helping the country become one of the world’s leading LNG exporters.
Furthermore, Sheikh Hamad invested in infrastructure, healthcare, education, and public services. These projects supported long-term national development and attracted international investment. At the same time, Qatar expanded its diplomatic role and increased its influence across regional and global affairs.
In 2013, Sheikh Hamad voluntarily transferred power to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The smooth transition ensured political stability and marked a historic moment in the Gulf region.
Barzani’s participation in the condolence ceremony honored Sheikh Hamad’s legacy while reaffirming the enduring relationship between the Kurdistan Region and Qatar. His visit also reflected the importance of maintaining strong diplomatic relations during significant national moments.
