A major environmental initiative has begun in Zakho to expand green spaces and strengthen climate resilience across the Kurdistan Region. The Zakho reforestation project aims to plant 16,350 trees through cooperation between the Zakho Independent Administration, the International Labour Organization (ILO), and the University of Zakho.
The project represents a new phase of the wider One Million Trees campaign, which focuses on increasing forest coverage and promoting environmental sustainability. Previous efforts under the campaign have already resulted in the planting of more than 40,000 trees across different areas.
The latest initiative will transform land within the University of Zakho campus into a large green area. Moreover, organizers developed the project over two years to ensure long-term success and focus on sustainable growth rather than only increasing tree numbers.
The project includes the installation of a modern irrigation system and the creation of a dedicated maintenance team. These steps aim to improve tree survival rates and support healthy development as the saplings mature.
The initiative will mainly feature pistachio and olive trees because of their environmental and economic importance. These species will contribute to biodiversity protection while helping create a sustainable urban forest.
In addition to environmental benefits, the project will generate employment opportunities for local residents, internally displaced persons, and refugees. Workers will participate in planting and maintenance activities throughout the project’s different stages.
The ILO will provide labor protections and health insurance support for employees involved in the initiative. This assistance will help improve workplace safety and provide better conditions for workers.
Once completed, the forest will cover approximately 80 to 90 dunams within the University of Zakho campus. The site will include walking paths, seating areas, and cafés for students, researchers, and visitors.
The new green space will also support education and research by providing a natural environment for academic activities. Additionally, it will encourage public engagement with nature and increase environmental awareness.
Officials expect the project to improve air quality, expand urban green coverage, and support biodiversity across the Kurdistan Region. The initiative also reflects growing cooperation between public institutions, international organizations, and academic bodies.
By combining environmental restoration with job creation and community development, the project highlights a broader approach to sustainable growth. Looking ahead, continued maintenance and monitoring will remain essential to achieving long-term environmental goals.
