Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani Congratulates Yazidis on Midsummer Holiday

President Nechirvan Barzani congratulated the Yazidi community on the occasion of the Midsummer holiday, reaffirming the Kurdistan Region’s commitment to coexistence, equality, and religious diversity. His message highlighted the importance of protecting every community while promoting unity across the Kurdistan Region.

Barzani addressed his greetings to Baba Sheikh, the Mir of the Yazidis, members of the Yazidi Spiritual Council, and Yazidi families living in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and around the world. He wished the community happiness, prosperity, and stronger unity during one of the faith’s important religious celebrations.

The president emphasized that the Kurdistan Region would remain a homeland for every ethnic and religious community. He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting diversity while rejecting discrimination against any group.

The statement reflected the Kurdistan Region’s long-standing policy of encouraging peaceful coexistence among its diverse population. In addition, regional leaders continue promoting equal rights and mutual respect through official initiatives and public messages during religious occasions.

The Yazidi community represents one of the oldest indigenous religious groups in the Middle East. Its traditions extend back centuries and remain an important part of the Kurdistan Region’s cultural and historical identity. Annual religious festivals also strengthen community ties and preserve longstanding customs.

Meanwhile, many Yazidis continue rebuilding their lives after the 2014 attack on Sinjar by the self-proclaimed Islamic State group. Thousands of people lost their lives, while many others experienced displacement, captivity, and severe humanitarian hardships.

Kurdish authorities continue supporting reconstruction efforts in Sinjar and encourage the voluntary return of displaced families. Officials also seek stronger cooperation with humanitarian organizations to improve housing, education, healthcare, and public infrastructure throughout affected areas.

Regional leaders regularly emphasize protecting religious freedom as a foundation for long-term stability. They also encourage dialogue among different communities to strengthen social cohesion and preserve cultural heritage for future generations.

Barzani’s holiday message therefore carried broader significance beyond seasonal greetings. It reaffirmed official support for the Yazidi community while highlighting the Kurdistan Region’s commitment to inclusion, peaceful coexistence, and equal opportunities for all citizens.
