The Kurdistan Region has endured nearly 1,000 drone and missile attacks since late February as regional tensions continue to escalate. The sustained campaign has caused civilian and security force casualties while increasing pressure on regional stability and critical infrastructure.
Security records indicate that 966 drones and missiles have targeted the Kurdistan Region since February 28. The attacks have killed 32 people and injured around 150 others during the ongoing conflict. Furthermore, five additional drones struck the region within the past 24 hours.
Four of the latest drones targeted Sulaimani, while another struck Erbil. Security authorities continue assessing the damage and monitoring potential threats across affected areas. Meanwhile, officials remain on high alert because attacks have continued despite ongoing diplomatic efforts.
Most strikes have targeted the U.S. Consulate General, coalition facilities at Erbil International Airport, and bases linked to Iranian Kurdish opposition groups. However, several attacks have also affected nearby civilian areas and regional security positions.
The casualties include seven Peshmerga officers serving under the Kurdistan Regional Government, one Kurdish security officer, and two civilians. In addition, reports indicate that at least 20 members of Iranian Kurdish opposition groups have died since the attacks began.
Although the Kurdistan Region has avoided direct involvement in the broader conflict, its strategic location has increased security risks. Consequently, military installations and opposition positions have remained frequent targets throughout recent months.
The latest strikes coincided with comments from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding possible diplomatic progress with Iran. He said planned military action could be delayed to allow negotiations aimed at reducing regional tensions. Trump also stated that discussions included reopening the Strait of Hormuz and addressing concerns over Iran’s nuclear program.
Military deployments around Erbil have changed in recent days. Reports indicate that U.S. Patriot and British Rapid Sentry air defense systems have relocated, leaving the C-RAM system operating in the area. Air defense systems reportedly intercepted about 75 percent of incoming drones and missiles.
Security analysts believe future developments will depend on diplomatic negotiations and military decisions. Until tensions ease, authorities are expected to maintain heightened security and strengthen defenses against further attacks.
