Zakho has begun construction of what officials say will become the Zakho largest fountain, marking another major investment in the city’s growing tourism sector. The landmark attraction forms part of the second phase of the Corniche development and aims to strengthen Zakho’s position as a leading destination in the Kurdistan Region.
Construction crews have already started work, while authorities expect the project to finish within the next seven months. After opening, the attraction will welcome residents and visitors with advanced water displays, entertainment features, and expanded public spaces. Officials believe the development will attract more tourists while supporting local businesses and encouraging private investment.
Project supervisor Engineer Hadiya Mohammed confirmed that construction continues according to schedule. Meanwhile, Zakho Tourism Director Chia Amin described the project as a key part of the city’s long-term tourism strategy. He said officials want to improve visitor experiences while expanding recreational opportunities along the Corniche.
The project has an estimated investment of 13 billion Iraqi dinars. Furthermore, the fountain will cover nearly 12,000 square meters and feature synchronized water displays with modern laser technology. Officials expect it to become the largest fountain in Iraq after completion.
Developers have also planned additional facilities to support visitors. The complex will include a two-level underground parking garage with space for about 300 vehicles. Plans also feature an internationally recognized restaurant brand, creating a larger entertainment and commercial destination.
Authorities consider the investment another milestone in Zakho’s tourism growth. Over recent years, the city has attracted more visitors because of its scenic landscapes, strategic location, and improved infrastructure. Consequently, tourism has become an important driver of the local economy.
Officials also confirmed that planning continues for the Corniche’s third phase. The expansion will extend the waterfront by around two kilometers after current construction finishes. Looking ahead, authorities expect the Zakho largest fountain to become a landmark attraction that supports tourism, creates business opportunities, and strengthens economic growth across the Kurdistan Region.
