Mohammed Haji Mahmoud Criticizes Iraq’s Financial System and Kurdish Politics

Kurdistan Social Democratic Party leader Mohammed Haji Mahmoud has criticized Iraq’s financial system and alleged widespread corruption. He also urged Kurdish political parties to restore parliament and form a new regional cabinet.

Mahmoud made the remarks on August 8 during a ceremony in Gulakhana. The event marked the 50th anniversary of the Kurdistan Social Democratic Party’s establishment.

During his speech, Mahmoud described alleged financial misconduct in Iraq as “pillage” rather than ordinary theft. He referred to reports involving large amounts of money allegedly transported from private residences.

However, the allegations were not independently verified based on the information available about his remarks. Nevertheless, his comments highlighted broader concerns about financial management and corruption.

Meanwhile, Mahmoud connected Iraq’s domestic challenges with wider political developments across the Middle East. He argued that regional changes could directly affect Kurdish political issues and future stability.

The KSDP leader also called for greater cooperation among Kurdish political forces. In particular, he urged parties to reactivate the Kurdistan Parliament after years of limited legislative activity.

Mahmoud argued that parliamentary inactivity has restricted the Region’s ability to pass new legislation. He also said stronger parliamentary activity could help address decisions from Baghdad.

Furthermore, he called for faster progress toward forming the next Kurdistan Regional Government cabinet. He urged political parties to overcome disagreements and prioritize institutional work.

Mahmoud also supported a confederal model for Iraq as a framework for peaceful coexistence. He urged Baghdad to learn from previous mistakes and manage regional developments carefully.

Moreover, he linked security in the Kurdistan Region with stability across the Middle East. His comments reflected the KSDP’s longstanding focus on Kurdish political rights and regional security.

The KSDP was established on August 8, 1976, making its 50th anniversary particularly significant. The party has participated in successive Kurdistan Parliament terms and regional government administrations.

Going forward, Kurdish parties face pressure to resolve political differences and restore legislative institutions. Meanwhile, economic concerns and Baghdad-Erbil relations will remain important political issues.

Mahmoud’s remarks therefore combine criticism of Iraq’s financial governance with calls for Kurdish political unity. His proposals could increase pressure for parliamentary activity and faster cabinet formation.
