President Barzani Says KRG-Baghdad Relations at ‘Excellent Stage’

Kurdistan Democratic Party President Masoud Barzani said relations between the Kurdistan Regional Government and Baghdad remain strong. He described the relationship as an “excellent stage” marked by coordination and mutual understanding.

Barzani made the remarks during a meeting with Holly Vare, Britain’s newly appointed Consul General in Erbil. The meeting focused on developments in Iraq, relations between Erbil and Baghdad, and wider regional changes.

According to the statement, Barzani said cooperation between the KRG and federal government has improved significantly. He also highlighted continued coordination between the two sides under Prime Minister Ali Zaidi.

The meeting therefore placed Erbil-Baghdad relations among the main issues discussed by Barzani and Vare. Both sides also exchanged views on political developments and changes across the Middle East.

Meanwhile, Barzani welcomed Vare to her new diplomatic position in the Kurdistan Region. He congratulated her and expressed readiness to support her efforts during her diplomatic assignment.

Vare, said she plans to strengthen relations between Britain and the Kurdistan Region. She also praised progress achieved by the Region across several sectors.

The discussions reflected Britain’s continued diplomatic engagement with the Kurdistan Region. Furthermore, stronger relations could support cooperation in political, economic, security, and institutional areas.

For the Kurdistan Region, improved relations with Baghdad remain important for political and economic stability. Coordination between Erbil and Baghdad also affects issues involving budgets, public administration, security, and regional governance.

At the same time, Britain remains an important international partner for the Kurdistan Region. Therefore, continued diplomatic engagement could create opportunities for broader cooperation across several sectors.

The meeting also comes amid wider political and security changes across the Middle East. Consequently, stronger communication between Kurdish and British officials could help address emerging regional challenges.

Going forward, relations between Erbil and Baghdad will remain closely watched. Meanwhile, Vare’s new diplomatic role could provide additional opportunities to expand British-Kurdish cooperation.

Barzani’s comments indicate that the KRG currently views coordination with Baghdad positively. However, continued dialogue and practical cooperation will remain essential for maintaining that relationship.

Overall, the meeting highlighted two important priorities: stable Erbil-Baghdad relations and stronger British-Kurdish ties. Both issues remain significant for the Kurdistan Region’s political and economic outlook.
