Korek Telecom Faces Regulatory Dispute as Baghdad Court Suspends CMC Decision

A Baghdad court issued a stay suspending the Iraqi Communications and Media Commission’s decision against Korek Telecom. CEO Sirwan Barzani announced the major injunction following months of escalating conflict between the operator and federal regulators. The judicial decision halts immediate regulatory measures and provides a temporary legal reprieve for the Kurdish telecommunications provider.

The long-running conflict intensified when the regulatory body moved to cancel a previous settlement agreement with Korek. Regulatory officials claimed that the operator had failed to meet necessary financial, legal, and contractual obligations. Korek executives countered that judicial committees had approved the September 2025 settlement terms before the authority unilaterally revoked them.

Recent regulatory directives ordered subscribers to stop purchasing recharges or renewing existing accounts with the network. Regulators also initiated asset-seizure procedures and threatened a complete shutdown of core network components and towers. Subscribers expressed immediate concern because losing service could directly affect bank accounts, digital payments, and government services.

Korek’s leadership maintains that the commission lacked the legal authority to revoke signed agreements without constitutional review. Company lawyers are actively pursuing comprehensive legal remedies in federal courts to protect shareholders and subscribers nationwide. This temporary stay by the Rusafa Court represents a critical tactical victory for the operator’s legal strategy.

Telecommunications analysts note that the legal outcome could influence future corporate investment across the Iraqi republic. Arbitrary regulatory changes often create economic instability and reduce investor confidence within expanding regional technology markets. Millions of mobile subscribers currently await further guidance regarding network continuity and potential service interruptions.

The Communications and Media Commission has not yet issued an official response to the court ruling. Future proceedings will determine whether the regulator will appeal the judicial decision or pause network shutdown procedures. The next legal phases will establish important precedents for corporate governance and regulatory boundaries in Iraq.
