Engineers have officially started work on the landmark Shorsh Bridge along the strategic Erbil-Koya highway corridor. This ambitious undertaking represents the first composite engineering structure of its specific design in the Kurdistan Region. Furthermore, the massive project will support a crucial transit link connecting eastern communities with the regional capital.
Erbil Governor Omed Xoshnaw highlighted the unique scale of the structural design during a recent announcement. The infrastructure expansion will facilitate safer travel while accelerating regional economic integration across neighboring districts.
Contractor Awzan Company has already begun driving foundation piles near the prominent Degala Dam spillway site. The completed bridge will span 250 meters across challenging terrain while carrying six traffic lanes. Additionally, concrete support piers will reach an impressive height of 48 meters above the surrounding natural basin.
The design uses durable concrete piers paired with heavy steel girders to ensure structural integrity. Consequently, this engineering approach will create a reliable crossing capable of supporting heavy commercial vehicles for decades.
This impressive structure forms a key element of a broader regional transit transformation strategy. Regional leaders are actively promoting this extensive program to modernize travel corridors and improve overall road safety. The entire Erbil-Koya highway project spans 48.5 kilometers, with total costs reaching 683 billion dinars.
Meanwhile, construction teams have already paved 22 kilometers of the 30 kilometers currently under active construction. Regional ministry officials expect to complete the strategic multi-lane highway corridor by 2028.
Authorities completed more than 800 road and bridge projects between 2019 and 2026 across the northern provinces. These completed transport schemes represent a combined investment of more than one trillion Iraqi dinars.
Moreover, local authorities finance these major infrastructure upgrades primarily through domestic revenue sources and weigh-station fees. Government planners also prioritize domestic contracting firms to execute complex civil engineering projects despite fiscal challenges.
Enhanced road infrastructure will lower cargo transit costs while connecting rural agricultural producers with urban consumer centers. Additionally, extensive safety upgrades, including new guardrails, clear road markings, and visible signage, will protect local motorists.
